Donovan Mitchell has been crushing ankles this season. However, this does not diminish the criticism he sometimes invites for his playing.

However, the 7x All-Star shooting guard addressed the viral exchange with Dennis Schroder during the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Game 7 win over the Toronto Raptors.

The moment in question occurred early in the second quarter when Mitchell committed a turnover that led to a fastbreak opportunity for RJ Barrett, who finished with an easy layup. Schroder, who hustled back on defense along with James Harden, found himself visibly frustrated and appeared to call Mitchell out for not recovering after the mistake.

The sequence quickly gained traction online, but Mitchell made it clear after the game that there was no issue between the two.

“Well, that was the first thing Dennis ever texted me, he said, ‘You know, I’m happy to be here,’ and then he was like, ‘I hope I can be honest with you because I’m gonna be honest with you.’ I’m the type of guy that loves being held accountable in every pass. I’m not a perfect player, no one is,” he said.

Additionally, he explained that Schroder has acted directly with him since arriving in Cleveland and that honesty defines their relationship. Mitchell even pointed out that Schroder set that tone in his very first message, saying he wanted to speak openly.

Though he also emphasized the importance of communication, noting that the two regularly sit down to watch films and discuss adjustments.

However, after a relatively quiet first half, the seven-time NBA All-Star responded in the second half and finished with 22 points on 9-of-20 shooting. His performance helped Cleveland secure a 114-102 win and advance to the second round.

Donovan Mitchell Gets Honest About James Harden’s Impact

When asked about the influence James Harden has had on the Cleveland Cavaliers this season, Donovan Mitchell made honest comments.

Cleveland made a major backcourt shift ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, moving on from Darius Garland and bringing in a more experienced lead guard to pair alongside Mitchell. The move raised questions at the time, especially given Garland’s production, but the Cavaliers are now seeing the upside as they advance deeper into the playoffs.

Mitchell, who has shared the floor with guards like Mike Conley and Garland in the past, pointed to Harden’s experience and presence as a key difference, saying, “he meant the world to me.”

“When you play with another guy at that level, the communication with us has been great for the group and me. His play speaks for himself.”

While neither Mitchell nor Harden had standout scoring nights in Game 7, the Cavaliers still managed to close out the series behind a dominant performance from Jarrett Allen, who finished with 22 points and 19 rebounds.
