Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to get over the hump this season.

The Cleveland Cavaliers lost in the second round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs to the Indiana Pacers.

It was a disappointing end for a Cavaliers team that had hopes of competing for the title. Now, the Cavaliers will enter this season hungry and motivated to get the job done.

Donovan Mitchell has never gotten out of the second round of the playoffs in his career and he’s hoping that this is the year they finally get it done with the Cavaliers.

Donovan Mitchell says the Cleveland Cavaliers are giving Jaylon Tyson opportunities early this season

Heading into this season the Cavaliers are considered the team to beat in the East. Despite having big expectations, they are still expected to play 22-year-old Jaylon Tyson.

Tyson was selected by the Cavaliers with the 20th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Throughout his rookie season, he was assigned several times to the Cleveland Charge.

The Cavaliers have a lack of depth along the wings, so Tyson could have a chance to shine this season.

Mitchell talked about what he has seen from Tyson so far and said that the Cavaliers are going to give him early season opportunities.

“He’s one of our best in shape, most in shape players that we have right now.

“I’ve challenged him all summer, I’ve said, ‘every time we play a basketball game, every time we play, anytime that anything’s live, we’re battling back and forth.’

“He understands consistently what it’s going to take. On the flip side, he’s made me a better player.

“Being able to do that shows what level, but surely shows that he’s ready. He’s hungry, he’s working on his jump shot, working on being smart, showing his hand, not failing, Mitchell added.

“He’s obviously going to have some opportunities early this season, especially. You’re thrown into the deep end, you got to learn how to swim.

“There’s no time like the present. Like we can sit here and kind of try to get him along and show him the film, but we’re throwing him right in there.

“You don’t just do that for guys who aren’t necessarily ready, I think it’s something where you have to have that trust and belief in order to be able to be that. And I think he’s earned that, and that’s a respect to him.

“He’s great energy, great vibes, positive, always wants to be great in what he does.”

Jaylon Tyson’s 2024-25 NBA stats

Tyson was a first-round draft pick after having an impressive showing with the California Bears. He earned First Team All-Pac-12 honors after averaging 19.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

Tyson played just 9.6 minutes per game as a rookie with Cleveland, but he did have a couple of breakout moments when he was given increased playing time.

Tyson posted 31 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 1 block in Cavaliers’ season finale. He also posted 16 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals in a game on November 20.

These two performances displayed Tyson’s well-rounded skill set that he showcased in college.

If Tyson steps up, the Cavaliers will be able to overcome the loss of Strus and they will have their new versatile wing in their rotation.
