A bold comparison between two eras of dominant basketball is stirring up plenty of debate, and Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green stepped in with his own perspective on the matter.

Houston Rockets forward Kevin Durant drew attention by comparing the Philadelphia 76ers’ new roster to the 2016-17 Golden State Warriors team he joined. Green addressed those comments on his podcast, The Draymond Green Show.

“I think to understand this statement, though, you always have to understand the way KD views basketball. The way KD views basketball is very Uncle Drew-ish. This game will and always will be about buckets. That’s how KD views the game,” Green said.

Green’s argument makes sense considering his experience. The Golden State Warriors won two championships after signing up KD in 2016 through their defense and shooting ability. The Philadelphia 76ers have never reached the third round since 2001.

The comparison was a result of Philadelphia acquiring LeBron James, Joel Embiid, and Jaylen Brown to join Tyrese Maxey during the off-season. He argued four potential 25-point scorers make the roster stronger on paper than the Warriors team he joined.

Draymond Green continued, “When KD says, ‘Yo, they got four 25-point scorers,’ you have to understand, in KD’s mind, what that means. This game is about buckets.”

This is important, considering the difference that exists between the two teams. The Golden State team came into the 2016-17 season after an incredible 73-9 season and a trip to the finals, something Philadelphia hasn’t done since 2000-01.

That contrast did not stop other former teammates from weighing in on Durant’s comparison as well.

Klay Thompson Pushes Back on Kevin Durant Comparison

Warriors legend Klay Thompson also reacted after Durant kept the conversation going on Instagram, posting a short but pointed response of his own.

“Aye man, u good? What u using my full government [name] for?” Thompson wrote on his Instagram story in response to Durant, who kept the comparison going online.

Thompson teamed up with Durant between 2016 and 2019, during which period they won two titles together. This shows just how much the Warriors’ star players take that period personally, as well as the casual manner in which Durant referred to their contribution.

The Philadelphia team certainly offers offensive firepower; however, to emulate what the Golden State teams could build, they need more than just individual players

That Golden State core, consisting of Durant, Stephen Curry, Thompson, and Green, would end up going to six NBA Finals in eight seasons with a combination of scoring and defense that is the benchmark for what Philadelphia will have to replicate with its own roster.

Leave your comment on whether you believe the Philadelphia roster can do so.
