There has been an ongoing contract stalemate between the Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga. It has hindered the organization from adding supporting players around NBA stars Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler. So far, there hasn’t been any progress on a potential contract agreement between the restricted free agent and the Warriors.

On Monday, the Golden State had its media day. Kuminga did not appear, as reported on Sunday. According to his agent, Aaron Turner, they are still waiting on a deal that would please the young forward. But the veteran stars were present and addressed the questions about the 21-year-old free agent.

Green was asked about the current contract situation with his teammate and the Warriors. During his time with the media, the four-time NBA champion revealed the truth about Kuminga’s future.

Reporters asked Green if he believed Kuminga wanted to remain with the team.

“I think anyone should want to be in the franchise where they started [at]. Do I think he still wants to be here? I do think he still wants to be here. He said that to me that he still wants to be here,” he answered.

The four-time All-Star believes Kuminga wants to stay in the Bay Area, where he won a championship in 2022.

“When you’re still with the franchise that drafted you, I don’t care what has happened. You don’t just throw that in the middle of the ring and say, ‘Hey, somebody else take it,’ because you never get it back. I’m thankful, going on Year 14 with the same team, I’ve never had to experience that,” Draymond Green continued. “But I’ve seen people go through it. It’s never the same. So I think– I know– he wants to be here.”

Draymond Green and other star veterans respect Kuminga’s decision not to be with the team on Monday

The Warriors are ready to take on the challenge of the 2025-26 NBA season, despite having a somewhat passive offseason. It wasn’t long since the organization added Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton to the roster. They also re-signed Gary Payton II.

However, Kuminga’s absence was evident, and it was brought to Draymond Green and the other veterans. Despite the free agent’s decision to skip the media interviews, Green said that the team respects his decision.

“Anytime a teammate’s not here, it sucks,” Green commented.

Curry gave his thoughts on the matter.

“This is a little different because you have a guy that’s trying to figure out his situation, and we respect that process,” the two-time MVP said. “It’s going to play out, and when he’s here — ready to work, like we expect him to be locked in on doing what he needs to do to help us win.”
