Draymond Green Opens Up About Competitive Jealousy Over Back-to-Back NBA Titles

Draymond Green breathed a huge sigh of relief when the San Antonio Spurs made it to the NBA Finals. It wasn’t because of his support for the team. Rather, it was to keep OKC from matching the Golden State Warriors’ back-to-back title wins.

The OKC Thunder entered this season as the title favorite. After the Thunder failed to go back-to-back, Green recently admitted that he didn’t want the OKC to repeat the championship this year because of competitive jealousy.

“You’re going to put on an act and be like, you know, I don’t really care if OKC wins again or not,” Green said on his eponymous show. “Deep down inside, you don’t want to see another team go back-to-back. Like, we did that. We were the last team to do that, right? Like, you want to hold on to some of that.”

Since the Dubs went back-to-back in 2017 and 2018, eight different teams have won titles, a trend that breaks away from dynastic dominance. Before the Warriors, LeBron James’ Miami Heat had been able to do so in 2012 and 2013.

The Collective Bargaining Agreement that was signed in 2023 made it difficult for teams to build an unbeatable roster. Under the new CBA, the league put in place punitive regulations for first and second aprons. This has made it difficult for teams to put together big stars for a long time.

Right after winning the title in 2024, the Celtics were forced to shed players like Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday right after the championship run.

In over a decade, the Warriors have remained the last dynasty in the league. It’s understandable why Green wouldn’t want his team to be dethroned as one of the greatest teams in NBA history, as he concluded.

“However, I think for me personally, when you initially lose and you’re done, you’re feeling just the competitive fire in you, it’s like, ‘God damn it, we’re done.'”

While Green admitted his worry of another team making a repeat winning year, he’s not worried about nerves in the playoffs

Draymond Green’s Perspective on the Playoffs

Across an entire decade spent with the Golden State Warriors, Draymond Green has won four NBA titles, with the most recent one coming back in 2022.

“For me personally, and it could be different for me just because of the trajectory of my career, right? I’m so fortunate and blessed that I don’t have to spend every playoff season with the pressure or feeling of, ‘I have to get a championship,’ because I’ve experienced it, you know, I’ve done it four times.”

The star forward has performed well for the team in the postseason, managing 11.4 points per game and 8.6 rebounds for the team.
