Jonathan Kuminga’s contract situation remains unresolved as season approaches.
He was absent from media day, with negotiations still at a standstill between the player and the team.
A decision is not far off, though. Kuminga has until October 1 to accept the Warriors’ $7.9 million qualifying offer for the 2025-26 season, which would then put him in line to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
The latest offers from Golden State are said to be three years at $75 million or two years at $45 million, both featuring a team option for the final year.
At the Warriors media day, Draymond Green addressed Kuminga’s contract situation, sharing his perspective.
He confirmed that Kuminga expressed his desire to remain with the San Francisco-based team.
Green also reflected on the value of staying with the team that drafted you, drawing on his 14 years of experience with the Warriors.
“I think anyone should want to be in the franchise that they started in,” the 35-year-old began by saying.
“So do I think he still wants to be here? Yeah, I do think he still wants to be here, and he said that to me, that he still wants to be here.
“When you’re still with the franchise that drafted you, I don’t care what’s happened. You don’t just throw that in the middle of the ring and say, hey, somebody else going to take it.
“Because you never get it back once you move on to the next franchise. I’m thankful I’m going into year 14 with the same, and never had to experience that, but I’ve seen people go through it and it’s never the same.
“I know this business. It will never be the same.
“Just because a contract negotiation didn’t go beautifully does not mean it’s the end of the road, and a contract negotiation that went beautifully don’t mean it’s the beginning. It could be the end. I take every day for what it’s worth in this league.
“That’s what I try to tell my young guys. That’s my message to Jonathan [Kuminga]. A contract negotiation is a contract negotiation for a reason.
“It’s one side trying to get the better of the other side, and when you’re trying to do that, just like in a basketball game, tempers flare.
“Things get heated. Sometimes people get kicked out of the room. Sometimes people walk back in the room. That’s just how it goes.”
While Kuminga’s future is still up in the air, the Golden State Warriors have not stood still. They have made a series of moves to round out their roster ahead of training camp.
Al Horford has joined the team on a multi-year deal, and both Gary Payton II and De’Anthony Melton have also signed on for new stints with the club.
The Warriors have also signed Will Richard, their 56th overall pick in the second round, to a four-year contract. Meanwhile, Alex Toohey, taken at No. 52, has agreed to a two-way NBA deal.
In addition to those signings, Ja’vier Francis has come aboard on an Exhibit 10 training camp contract while the team continue to wait for resolution on Kuminga’s future.
