The LA Lakers had hit a rough patch, losing eight of their last 13 games, which led many to question their championship readiness. Despite the setback, the Purple and Gold have bounced back to form after beating the Memphis Grizzlies and Sacramento Kings in their last two games. However, Dwyane Wade's latest proclamation might not sit with the Lakers fans as he has completely ruled them out of the title race, stating his desire to see Bronny and LeBron James' duo ship in action instead.
While the Lakers have shown offensive potential by having six players averaging points in double digits this season, their supporting cast often struggled with consistency. When facing stronger opposition, the Lakers tend to play tentatively, as evidenced by their offensive rating being in the mid-table (15th) and their defensive rating being among the bottom 10 in the league.
Addressing this uncertainty on his podcast, D-Wade suggested that the Lakers, under their new coach, JJ Redick, should prioritize building a culture for the future generation. That included giving James Jr. more time on the court and allowing him to learn from his dad while getting involved in pick-and-roll plays with him.
"When I look at the Lakers, I want Anthony Davis to have an MVP-type year. As a fan, I want to see LeBron play at the level he wants to play at. Honestly, bring Bronny up, we want to see that. As a fan of the game, I am not looking at the Lakers and say they're gonna win a championship," Wade said. "We want to see Bronny. This is not a championship team… right now it's not a championship roster overall."
Although "Flash" believes that the Lakers' current core isn't championship material, the franchise clearly disagrees. With a 15-12 record, they're just four wins away from hunting down the third-seeded Houston Rockets in the Western Conference standings.
While their supporting cast needs to show that they can consistently back LeBron James and Anthony Davis up, it would be premature to dismiss their championship just yet when teams like Milwaukee Bucks, Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks are all struggling to find their best rhythm.
Meanwhile, Bronnt has been making steady progress with the South Bay Lakers, averaging 14.7 points and 1.3 steals across his six appearances. So, if the Lakers can string together a solid winning streak, we might see the tandem of James Jr. and Sr. earning meaningful minutes at the NBA level.
