The San Antonio Spurs suffered back-to-back home losses in the 2026 NBA Finals to the New York Knicks, prompting speculation about their lineup. While Victor Wembanyama has been racking up numbers, inefficiency and lack of support are troubling the Spurs. Apart from the French giant, rookie Dylan Harper has emerged as one of the few positives for the Spurs.

The Spurs started both games on a dominant note but failed to close out the games in their favor. Following Wembanyama, Devin Vassell, and De’Aaron Fox have logged the most minutes for the Spurs. However, Vassell and Fox failed to serve as reliable secondary options for San Antonio.

A recent report by NBA analyst Evan Sidery revealed that Harper and Wembanyama’s pairing is the most effective combination for the Spurs. He also suggested that the Spurs should consider starting Harper over Fox to turn the series around.

The Spurs are outscoring the Knicks by 15.3 points per 100 possessions when Dylan Harper shares the court with Victor Wembanyama,” Sidery wrote. “Needing to win three of the next four to force a Game 7 in the NBA Finals, it’s time to bench De’Aaron Fox in favor of Wembanyama’s long-term option.”

The Spurs acquired Fox last season ahead of the February trade deadline in a blockbuster three-team deal. With this move, San Antonio added a veteran talent around the young Spurs core after Chris Paul’s exit.

Is De’Aaron Fox Struggling to Adjust to Life Behind Victor Wembanyama?

Veteran guard Fox struggled in Game 1 loss to the Knicks, scoring 7 points on 3-of-13 shooting from the field. However, the 28-year-old guard bounced back in Game 2 with 20 points on 8-of-12 field goals. While Fox was the primary offensive player for the Sacramento Kings, he has been playing second fiddle to Wembanyama for the Spurs.

While he averaged over 25 points per game before joining the Spurs, his numbers took a major dip after joining the Spurs. However, the Spurs guard doesn’t mind sacrificing for the team as long as the Spurs stand a chance to win a championship.
