Dynamite Pacers prove they are never out of a game

They're the Indiana Pacers, but given the recent turn of events in the NBA playoffs, they may as well be called "The Comeback Kids."

Rick Carlisle's team overcame a 20-point first-half deficit to stun the Cavaliers in their Game 2 win on Tuesday. It was the second instance in the ongoing playoffs when they dug themselves out of such a deep hole, following their series-clinching Game 5 win over the Bucks.

In both games, the Pacers trailed by over seven points entering the final minute. Against the Bucks, they were down 118-111 with 40 seconds left in overtime, only to pull off a miraculous 119-118 win.

Against the Cavaliers on Tuesday, they were similarly down 119-112 with 57.1 seconds left in the fourth quarter before pulling off the win.

According to ESPN Research, teams were 1-1,640 since 1997-98 when down by seven points or more in the final minute of a playoff game.

Thanks to the Pacers, teams are now 3-1,640 in the exact scenario. Remarkably, Indiana pulled off two such improbable wins in three games, proving that it is never truly out of a ball game.

The common denominator in both wins was Tyrese Haliburton, who iced the pair of victories with buzzer-beating game-winners. Against the Bucks, he attacked Giannis Antetokounmpo in isolation and made a game-winning layup to help the Pacers advance.

Against the Cavaliers, he collected an offensive rebound of a missed free throw and drained a three — a sequence not seen in over 20 years. Hali is only the second player in the last 20 seasons to hit two game-winners in the dying seconds in the same postseason.

The Pacers are just two wins away from advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals for a second consecutive year. Carlisle's team was overlooked entering the 2025 NBA playoffs due to the Celtics' and Cavaliers' regular-season dominance, not to mention the hype surrounding the Knicks. It would be nothing short of spectacular if Haliburton could lead them to the NBA Finals.
