Egor Demin made a statement in Chicago this week. He showed NBA scouts his range and lit it up from beyond the arc with 16 straight 3-pointers. As BYU’s first NBA prospect in nearly 15 years, everyone is getting to know his backstory.
Demin, a native of Moscow, Russia, brings ideal size and accuracy, which puts him in the conversation as a lottery pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. However, the projections for the 6-foot-9 guard are all over the place.
CBS seems to be torn on Demin's position. Kyle Boone sees him going No. 10 to the Houston Rockets. While Adam Finkelstein has him No. 22 overall to the Atlanta Hawks.
"The best passer in the draft finds a fit in Houston on a young team to help connect it all together," Boone wrote. "Demin's highlight-level passing will elevate the Rockets' star pieces and its already-strong offense under Ime Udoka."
"Demin may be the best passer in the draft and has terrific perimeter size to match," Finkelstein noted. "He's got to figure out what position he can defend and prove he's a reliable spot-up shooter, but next to a ball dominant shot-making/scoring guard like Trae Young he would make a lot of sense…at least offensively."
ESPN has Demin No. 12 overall to the Chicago Bulls. Here's what Jonathan Givony said:
"Demin is a polarizing prospect, more theoretical in nature than some would hope in terms of the productivity, consistency and bankable skills he can hang his hat on early in his NBA career. He's also exceptionally talented, a 6-foot-9 point guard who can make every pick-and-roll read and pass, often in highlight-reel fashion.
The evolution of his shooting will be a major swing skill for his development, but he made promising gains in a few different areas as the season moved on and clearly has significant upside to grow into at 19 years old."
If Demin does last past the top 20 picks, one team to watch will be the Utah Jazz at No. 21
The former Cougars standout has a relationship with Jazz decision makers Ryan Smith and Danny Ainge, both BYU alums. It's not a stretch to believe getting one of the best passers in the draft outside of the top ten would be a steal.
The 2025 NBA Draft starts on June 25 in Brooklyn, New York at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
