Every NBA Team's Most Overrated Player This Season
Credit: Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports Credit: Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

There has always been one NBA player that stands out when discussing an overrated member of a team. These players are heavily protected by the media, the fanbase, or even their teams when it comes to attention or even minutes earned. In 2023-24, every NBA team has one overrated player who is benefitting from too much praise.

Atlanta Hawks - De’Andre Hunter

Credit: Erik Williams-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 15.7 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 1.5 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.3 BPG

It is always tempting to throw Trae Young’s name into any conversation about overrated players in the NBA. But the fact of the matter is that Young is putting up excellent offensive numbers without much help. The Hawks’ most overrated player has to be De’Andre Hunter because he hasn’t improved as much as we would have expected on both ends of the court. Hunter is still only 26 years old so he has time but he needs to start showing his true potential at some point over the next few seasons.

Boston Celtics - Luke Kornet

Credit: Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 5.1 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 1.0 APG, 0.4 SPG, 1.0 BPG

The Celtics don’t have many overrated players this season because of how dominant they have been. However, the Celtics probably could’ve found a better backup big man than Luke Kornet who is only posting 5.1 points per game and doesn’t excel in any particular area despite earning over 15 minutes per game. Boston is tied with regards to their roster because of their "Big 6" salaries, but expect them to be in the market for more depth this summer.

Brooklyn Nets - Ben Simmons

Credit: Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 6.1 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 5.7 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.6 BPG

It’s a shame how far Ben Simmons has fallen after being a three-time All-Star and one of the best defenders in the league. Simmons has struggled with injuries and he could get a pass for that, but his decline started before his back started troubling him and he clearly isn’t worth a max salary anymore. Simmons still can't shoot, his playmaking has taken a big hit, and will still earn $40,338,144 next season.

Charlotte Hornets - Miles Bridges

Credit: Jaime Valdez-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 21.4 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 3.4 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.5 BPG

Miles Bridges’ numbers look good on paper but his impact isn’t there for a struggling Charlotte Hornets side that will be in the lottery once again. Bridges is also dealing with off-court issues which he should be excused for, but there is a reason why the Hornets wanted to trade him this season. Bridges doesn't get the job done defensively as consistently as he should considering his physical advantages and shoots under 35% from deep.

Chicago Bulls - Nikola Vucevic

Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 17.8 PPG, 10.7 RPG, 3.4 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.8 BPG

Nikola Vucevic is one of those players whose numbers look great but somehow his team isn’t doing well. Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan are scorers but Vucevic is supposed to man the middle for them. He struggles defending elite big men and that doesn’t help Chicago’s 19th-ranked defensive rating. Vucevic also hasn't made the Bulls a winning side since being acquired in 2020-21 which leads one to wonder if he just puts up empty stats.

Cleveland Cavaliers - Caris LeVert

Credit: Tom Horak-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 13.8 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 5.2 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.5 BPG

The Cavaliers have a ton of talent on the roster but Caris LeVert isn’t showing that he is untouchable. He is averaging 13.8 points per game but only shooting 41.8% from the field and 32.1% from three. His shot has been off all year and one has to question if that’s worth a salary exceeding $16 million next season. Unless LeVert gets his shooting on track, he will be a high-volume scorer who isn't particularly elite in any category.

Dallas Mavericks - Tim Hardaway Jr.

Credit: Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 14.9 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 1.8 APG, 0.5 SPG, 0.1 BPG

Tim Hardaway Jr started the season strong but has since seen his production drop. Averaging 14.9 points per game, the Mavericks need more from their third option who is shooting only 40.3% from the field. The shooting guard needs a lot of shots to get hot but that isn’t enough for the team that wants to contend. The Mavericks will desperately look for a third option this summer because Hardaway Jr will make $16,193,183 next season.

Denver Nuggets - Reggie Jackson

Credit: Jamie Valdez-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 10.2 PPG, 1.9 RPG, 3.8 APG, 0.5 SPG, 0.2 BPG

The Nuggets have done a great job building a team around players who aren’t overrated. Each player knows his role and does it perfectly, but for the sake of naming a player, Reggie Jackson is a name that pops out. He is a very capable backup point guard but shooting 43.7% from the field isn’t exactly elite for a player who backs up Jamal Murray. He is also averaging under four assists per game despite playing for a team that functions on ball movement.

Detroit Pistons - Isaiah Stewart

Credit: Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 10.9 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 1.6 APG, 0.4 SPG, 0.8 BPG

The Pistons have had such a bad season that everyone has to be questioned. The problem is, Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren are bursting with potential but Isaiah Stewart might not be. He is an aggressive big man with solid numbers, but we don’t know what his ceiling will be just yet. At nearly 23 years old, we have only seen a hot temper from him more than pure efficiency on the court.

Golden State Warriors - Andrew Wiggins

Credit: Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 13.0 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 1.7 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.5 BPG

The Warriors want to shock the world and win an NBA title this season but it isn’t happening in all likelihood. Andrew Wiggins had an excellent season in 2021-22 but has fallen off tremendously this season. Off-court issues could be affecting his play but there is no doubt the former No. 1 overall pick will be on the trading block come this summer. Shooting 45.1% from the field and 35.8% from three won't cut it for a team that needs to win right now.

Houston Rockets - Amen Thompson

Credit: Erik Williams-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 9.2 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 2.4 APG, 1.2 SPG, 0.6 BPG

The Houston Rockets are building the right team slowly and each player is improving in their role. Jalen Green was probably overrated to start the season but has since begun showing his potential which leaves No. 4 overall pick Amen Thompson on the radar. He has done well, but not as good as the three players drafted ahead of him. Thompson needs to improve his offensive game because he attempts only 1.0 threes per game and is making 14.3% of them.

Indiana Pacers - Obi Toppin

Credit: Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 10.1 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 1.5 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.5 BPG

The Pacers have an elite offense but for some reason, they seem to like Obi Toppin a little more than they probably should. The big man is a terrific athlete and an improving outside shooter, but he was a former top-10 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and isn’t impacting the game like it so far. As Toppin approaches 27 years old next year, the Pacers need to see a major improvement next season or might cash in on him.

Los Angeles Clippers - Terance Mann

Credit: Kyle Terada - USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 8.5 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 1.6 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.2 BPG

The Clippers might have a few players that one could point to for being overrated but Terance Mann always seems to get minutes because of his hustle and defensive acumen. However, his shooting from three has been very disappointing (33.7%) and he tends to go cold more than needed at the wrong times. The Clippers will continue to benefit from Mann's hustle and defense but poor playoff form will lead to them start clearing house.

Los Angeles Lakers - Austin Reaves

Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 15.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 5.6 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.3 BPG

The Los Angeles Lakers deserve credit for nurturing Austin Reaves’ growth as an undrafted rookie who has since become an important part of the team. However, most expected Reaves to increase his numbers significantly from last season and it hasn’t happened. Playing with LeBron James always boosts a player’s stock but Reaves has been slightly overrated by the fanbase and media in Los Angeles because he isn't elite in any area despite being a good (but not great) player.

Memphis Grizzlies - Marcus Smart

Credit: Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 14.5 PPG, 2.7 RPG, 4.3 APG, 2.1 SPG, 0.3 BPG

Marcus Smart will always compete on defense and is certainly an All-NBA Defensive Team candidate at his best, but he hasn’t been able to improve the Grizzlies’ ball movement at all. Memphis ranks dead last in offense and Smart hasn’t exactly helped in Ja Morant’s absence in this sense. Smart likely will have more impact on a championship contender and might not move the needle enough for a struggling team.

Miami Heat - Caleb Martin

Credit: Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 10.0 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 2.2 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.4 BPG

The Miami Heat always do a great job at building a roster with unheralded players so it is difficult to choose an overrated player for them. Terry Rozier isn’t lighting up the charts just yet but neither is Caleb Martin. Martin’s numbers are solid but he hasn’t hit “playoff form” yet which Miami is certainly hoping for. Until then, Martin is just "another guy" who needs to surprise people with his play.

Milwaukee Bucks - Khris Middleton

Credit: Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 15.2 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 5.3 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.3 BPG

The Milwaukee Bucks will hope that Khris Middleton gets back to his best but it seems unlikely at this point. Giannis Antetokounmpo’s former (primary) sidekick is struggling this season and even the addition of Damian Lillard probably won’t be enough to get over the hump in the East. Middleton’s future needs to be considered right now because he is getting paid over $29 million this season. A poor ending to the postseason means Middleton could be moved to give Giannis and Lillard a new third option.

Minnesota Timberwolves - Kyle Anderson

Credit: Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 6.6 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 4.3 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.6 BPG

Kyle Anderson is a role player but his production has decreased this season. He is posting his lowest scoring mark since the 2019-20 season and even if he contributes in other areas, there probably isn’t a player in the Timberwolves that deserves to be labeled as overrated more than him so far. Anderson is shooting under 25% from three this season and is approaching 31 years old.

New Orleans Pelicans - Jonas Valanciunas

Credit: Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 12.5 PPG, 9.0 RPG, 2.1 APG, 0.4 SPG, 0.9 BPG

The Pelicans have done well this season but there is always noise around Jonas Valanciunas being available for a trade. True or not, the big man contributes on the board and can score, but there are doubts about his ability to defend consistently especially when up against the dominant big men in the league. His numbers have dropped since last year and despite being 6'11", averages under 1.0 blocks per game.

New York Knicks - Bojan Bogdanovic

Credit: John Jones-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 15.7 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 1.8 APG, 0.5 SPG, 0.1 BPG

Bojan Bogdanovic had great numbers with Detroit but his age is starting to show a little bit with New York. He is only averaging 10.4 points per game with the Knicks since his trade and probably isn’t worth the $20,000,000 he is earning this season or the $19,032,850 he will get next season at 36 years old. Bojan is showing signs of decline with the Knicks despite the fact that his scoring will be sorely needed by the team in the playoffs.

Oklahoma City Thunder - Josh Giddey

Credit: Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 12.3 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 4.7 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.6 BPG

The Thunder are onto something in the West led by stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren. The entire team is built for longevity but they are competing now, which is obviously a great sign. Josh Giddey contributed as a big point guard, but his three-point shooting (31.1%) leaves much to be desired so far in his young career. The Thunder need to be ruthless with their roster as they improve, and Giddey needs to improve his scoring ability to be more of a threat.

Orlando Magic - Cole Anthony

Credit: Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 11.7 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 3.0 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.5 BPG

The Orlando Magic have a couple of exciting players but Cole Anthony hasn’t improved as much as we had expected. The point guard is only averaging 3.0 assists per game which means the Magic probably need to find an elite playmaker to take this team further. Anthony has played a backup role all season but is he worth $13,000,00 per season until 2025-26? That answer needs to be answered this summer because Anthony isn't scoring efficiently with a field-goal percentage under 44% and a three-point mark of under 34%.

Philadelphia 76ers - Tobias Harris

Credit: Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 17.2 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 3.1 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.6 BPG

The 76ers probably need more than what Tobias Harris is providing. This has been the same story for a few seasons, and it isn’t because Harris is a bad player by any means. He can score well and rebound but the 76ers want to win an NBA championship and sometimes, a bonafide All-Star instead of a good player is needed to get over the hump. Harris' numbers look good but aren't indicative of a star player who is making $39,270,150 this season.

Phoenix Suns - Bradley Beal

Credit: Daniel Dunn-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 17.3 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 5.1 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.4 BPG

The Phoenix Suns might be worrying about Bradley Beal’s production this season. The injury-prone shooting guard is most likely exiting his prime but will still earn over $50 million per year until the 2026-27 season. No doubt, this is handicapping what the Suns can do going forward with their current roster. Beal's scoring mark is the lowest since the 2015-16 season (17.4 PPG) and that could be a troubling sign that the shooting guard won't improve considerably over the next few years.

Portland Trail Blazers - Deandre Ayton

Credit: Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 16.4 PPG, 11.2 RPG, 1.7 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.8 BPG

Deandre Ayton isn’t exactly dominating the paint, even if his numbers look good. He has the same defensive habits as he did with the Suns and doesn’t look like an All-Star. The former No. 1 overall pick had very high expectations of him but hasn’t reached his potential just yet. At only 25 years old, there is still time but there are major doubts about his ability as a franchise player for Portland. Ayton still lacks toughness at times and isn't great defensively, averaging under 1.0 blocks per game at 7'0" and 250 lbs.

Sacramento Kings - Harrison Barnes

Credit: Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 12.2 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 1.2 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.1 BPG

The Kings always find a way to get the best out of Harrison Barnes in some games but he simply isn’t consistent enough for a team that wants to be more than a first-round exit. The Kings have two All-Stars and some solid youngsters, but they probably need to find one more All-Star player at the forward position to truly get better. Barnes is only averaging 2.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game and isn't great at generating steals or blocks despite making $18,000,000 next season.

San Antonio Spurs - Zach Collins

Credit: Daniel Dunn-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 11.1 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 2.8 APG, 0.5 SPG, 0.7 BPG

The Spurs need a lot of help on their current roster including playmaking, but Zach Collins is also competing at a position that probably needs upgrading. The big man plays hard and fits into San Antonio’s system in some ways, but he hasn’t excelled in the paint when it comes to defense and rebounding. The Spurs need to revamp their roster this summer around Victor Wembanyama because they don't want to waste any season of the Frenchman on the court.

Toronto Raptors - Gary Trent Jr.

Credit: Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 13.6 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 1.6 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.1 BPG

Gary Trent Jr. gets hot very quickly but he is streaky at best. The shooting guard is only averaging 42.8% from the field despite his three-point shooting which exceeds 40%. Trent Jr struggles to contribute in other areas besides shooting which means he is slightly overrated for a player earning $18,560,000 this season.

Utah Jazz - John Collins

Credit: Matthew Hinton-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 15.1 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 1.1 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.9 BPG

John Collins always seems to be at the forefront of some criticism because his shooting and defensive ability come and go. The Hawks couldn’t wait to trade him and the Jazz probably are in the same position. Collins is an excellent lob partner so perhaps he belongs on a new team that can make use of his abilities properly. Otherwise, Collins will be overpaid ($26,580,000 in 2024-25) despite not being excellent in any particular category including defense.

Washington Wizards - Jordan Poole

Credit: Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

2023-24 Season Statistics: 17.1 PPG, 2.7 RPG, 4.3 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.3 BPG

Jordan Poole hasn’t impressed a soul in Washington this season despite having a breakout season in the 2021-22 championship season with the Golden State Warriors. The shooting guard is a natural shooter and is 24 years old, so he has potential but hasn’t shown it at all with the Wizards. Posting under 42% from the field and 33% from three, Poole is having a horrific season shooting the ball despite earning $30,151,786 next season.
