Former NBA champion head coach Frank Vogel has a new job.
Vogel has joined the Dallas Mavericks’ coaching staff as an associate head coach, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. He will work on Jason Kidd’s staff in Dallas, giving them three coaches with head-coaching experience (Kidd, Vogel and Jay Triano).
Vogel, 52, last coached the Phoenix Suns for the 2023-2024 NBA season. The team had high expectations but went 49-33, then got swept in the first round of the playoffs. That was regarded as a disappointment, leading to his firing after just one season.
In October 2024, Vogel was hired as a consultant to Kidd. Now less than a year later, he has been added to Kidd’s staff as an associate head coach.
Vogel has been a coach in the NBA since 2001. He was an assistant with the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and Indiana Pacers. He then became the head coach of the Pacers, and later the Lakers and Suns.
As a head coach, Vogel has posted a .532 winning percentage. He has taken his teams to the playoffs eight times and won the NBA championship with the Lakers during the 2020 season. The Mavericks went 39-43 last season and missed the playoffs. They are in transition as they traded away Luka Doncic and have drafted Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick.
Vogel has some familiarity with one of the Mavericks’ top players in Anthony Davis, whom he coached while the two were with the Lakers.
