The Golden State Warriors have had a rough offseason thus far as they have failed to make any moves in free agency to upgrade their roster around their star trio of Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green.
Of course, the Warriors continue to await a decision by restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga and it appears as though they are not going to make any moves before the young forward decides on his NBA future either in Golden State or with another team.
Despite this, it has been reported that the Warriors do have deals in place with multiple free agents, including Al Horford, that will likely be finalized after Kuminga’s situation is resolved.
While the Warriors are still looking at other ways to upgrade their roster this summer, a former NBA player recently urged one of their Western Conference rivals to trade their star player to pair alongside Curry.
Former NBA star Joe Johnson recently urged the Los Angeles Lakers to trade LeBron James to the Warriors as he believes he would be better off playing alongside Curry that Luka Doncic.
“If I had to choose, I’m going Steph (over Doncic),” Johnson said. “Not only because he’s proven, but he’s a guy who's gonna command so much attention that LeBron will really get to play a natural position, which is like more of a facilitator. Yeah, he gonna probably still score about 22 to 25 points a night, but him facilitating? Oh my god.”
This is a bold statement by Johnson but one that does make sense, especially with James entering the final year of his contract with the Lakers after opting into his player option this summer instead of signing an extension.
Of course, Golden State has reportedly been pursuing a trade for James for multiple seasons but the Lakers have shut down their offers, but that could change this season.
Despite this, it would be very difficult for Golden State to pull off a trade for the future Hall of Fame forward as they would have to move either Butler or Green along with some other key players to match salaries.
While it would be hard for the Warriors to pull off, a pairing of Curry and James would be a lethal duo in the West that could help propel Golden State to another championship, though it seems to be nearly impossible with the Lakers looking to keep James on their roster this season.
