Former Dallas Mavericks Coach Claims 'Spooky Times' After Luka Doncic Trade

The Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis in what was a shocking trade in the NBA world, no matter how casual or hardcore. Since then, Dallas experienced its ups and downs. The Mavericks steadied the ship with the Cooper Flagg selection, but the early months after Doncic got traded were extremely scary. Most recently, Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison and his daughter were harassed by a Mavericks fan while dining at the Twin Peaks restaurant in Addison, Texas, on August 31, 2025.

Moreover, then-Mavericks Assistant Coach God Shammgod quit following the Doncic trade. Shammgod’s decision to quit has been a debatable topic, but the now-49-year-old recently discussed the reason why in a recent podcast appearance. Here’s what Shammgod said.

Former Dallas Mavericks Coach Claims “Spooky Times”

In an episode of the “It Is What It Is” podcast with rap legends Ma$e and Cam’Ron, Shammgod discussed his NBA playing and coaching careers. Shammgod also discussed the Doncic trade, why he quit the Mavericks, and how he appreciated everyone in the organization.

Shammgod said, “The thing about Dallas was, it was just getting spooky times, man. I love Dallas, and I’m cool with everyone that’s over there. When the [Doncic trade] went down, it was one of those things, if someone treats your man like that, it’s a countdown.” Shammgod quit the Mavericks and joined the Orlando Magic as an assistant coach. The New York City native earned a promotion from his previous role as a player development coach.

Dallas Mavericks’ Outlook

The Dallas Mavericks’ outlook entering the 2025-26 NBA season appears to be cautiously optimistic. The Mavericks’ roster is stacked, but the big questions are, “When is Kyrie Irving coming back?” and “Is Anthony Davis going to stay healthy?” If Irving, 33, and Davis, 32, return and stay healthy, respectively, then the Mavericks would be a deep team.

More than seven months have passed since the star player was traded, and much has happened within the Mavericks’ organization. Even former Majority Owner Mark Cuban reportedly hinted at turmoil within the organization over the Doncic trade, as many people like him didn’t want the Slovenian point guard to be traded.

However, Harrison and Majority Owner, Miriam Adelson, and Adelson’s son-in-law, Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont, went ahead with the Doncic trade with an alleged vision of Irving and Davis as the Mavericks’ veteran leaders. It’s still unclear what happened behind the scenes, but perhaps these individuals might come forward in the near future. We’ll see what happens.

Final Thoughts

The Dallas Mavericks announced that Flagg will make his NBA debut on October 22, 2025, during the Opening Night matchup between the Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs. The Flagg era will officially begin, whether the Mavericks’ fans like it or not.

Doncic has moved on from Dallas as he recently purchased a $25 million Manhattan Beach, California, home that was previously owned and designed by Russian businesswoman and former tennis player, Maria Sharapova.
