Former Duke Guard Agrees to a Deal With Magic

The Orlando Magic started making moves on Monday as the NBA Free Agency started. One of the deals they made was to address the need for a lead guard. Throughout the 2024-25 season, the team relied on Jalen Suggs as the primary ball handler. However, after he sustained injuries, the team had trouble with its depth.

In the 2025 NBA playoffs, they settled for Cory Joseph as their starting point guard. Unfortunately for the Magic, that wasn't enough, and it was one of the reasons they lost in the first round to the Boston Celtics.

On Monday, there was some good news for the Magic as they've reportedly agreed to a deal with a former Duke guard.

Tyus Jones reportedly agreed to a one-year, $7 million deal to play in Orlando. Last season, he was the starting point guard for the Phoenix Suns, averaging  10.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and 5.3 assists. Jones appeared in 81 games and was a starter 58 times.

ESPN's Shams Charania confirmed this report on X.

"Free agent guard Tyus Jones has agreed to a one-year, $7 million deal with the Orlando Magic, sources tell ESPN. Magic officials negotiated the deal with Jones' agent Kevin Bradbury of LIFT Sports Management, which gives Jones a key role for the East contenders," Charania posted.

Jones signed a one-year, $3 million contract to play for the Suns. There was hope that Phoenix would be a title-contending team. However, the team struggled to have a winning record, despite having the Big 3 of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal.

Jones joins a young Eastern Conference team that has shown competitiveness over the past two seasons. The Magic's decision to bring in the 2015 NCAA champion gives them more depth in the backcourt after trading away Cole Anthony to the Memphis Grizzlies.
