The Golden State Warriors have to decide on Jonathan Kuminga’s future with the team this summer. The 22-year-old swingman will hit restricted free agency and could explore a move to join a different team.
Despite the mixed opinions by fans, former Golden State Warriors guard Baron Davis believes the team should give Kuminga another chance by keeping him and continuing to develop him.
“We saw in the playoffs he’s someone that they need in addition to Jimmy,” Davis said about Kuminga via DJ Siddiqi of Basketball Insiders. “We’ll see what happens this offseason, but Kuminga could be an integral piece coming back. There’s a need and a place, and he’s ready to take that next step.”
“I thought these playoffs gave him a good opportunity to showcase his skills. I like Kuminga’s game and I think if he comes at that level that they need him to be at, he’s ultimately another one of those key pieces that could potentially put them over the hump,” he added.
In the same interview, Baron Davis urged the Golden State Warriors to improve their frontcourt depth, which has been exposed by the Houston Rockets and the Minnesota Timberwolves this postseason.
“Their ceiling is really kind of the move that they make in the offseason to upgrade themselves athletically right in the front court,” Davis explained. “I personally think they need some front-court athleticism to compete in the West with Nikola Jokic, Naz Reid and people like that.”
“They needed some help, I would definitely say, rebounding. Steve Kerr said it himself. Draymond Green at the five the majority of the season kind of wore him out. I saw similar things. If they can get some support, that would really help,” he added.
