Former Lakers Champion Reacts Strongly to LeBron James’ Latest Statement

It was all but confirmed this week that LeBron James plans to return for his 23rd NBA season, following a revealing interview with the Associated Press tied to his recent Amazon advertisement.

“I have a lot of time to take care of my injury, my knee, the rest of my body, and make sure I’m as close to 100% as possible when training camp begins in late September," James told the AP — signaling his intention to return for the 2025–26 season.

While most expected James would be back, nothing had been officially set in stone. He now has until June 29 to decide whether to opt in or out of his player option with the Los Angeles Lakers.

That said, James doesn’t seem to be in any rush. On Tuesday, he dropped the latest episode of his "Mind the Game" podcast with NBA legend Steve Nash. The episode caught attention as the duo fielded fan questions — including one about the toughest defenders they ever faced.

Without hesitation, James named former Lakers defensive standout and 2010 NBA champion Ron Artest — also known as Metta World Peace, or by his current legal name, Metta Sandiford-Artest.

“Ron Artest… Metta World Peace now,” James said. “Really good with his hands, laterally was really good, strong as an ox. I played against him in my early years when he was in Indiana — it was challenging for sure. One of the best defenders I’ve ever played against.”

Metta World Peace quickly responded to LeBron James’ praise on X, writing, “Ok. The King @KingJames gave me my props. I’m extending my 45-day vacay another 45 days.”

During his 17-year NBA career, Metta World Peace spent his most notable time with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played six seasons, and the Indiana Pacers, where he spent five. He was a one-time All-Star, a four-time NBA All-Defensive Team selection, the 2004 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, and earned All-NBA honors that same season.
