The NBA offseason is in full swing, and the Houston Rockets have been one of the most active teams in the league.
While the draft serves as the unofficial start of the offseason, the Rockets were already getting set for next season on the day of Game 7 of the NBA Finals. While last season was still going, the Rockets made what could be the biggest move of the offseason by trading for Kevin Durant.
Durant, of course, is one of the best players in league history, and he will be a key part of the Rockets’ hopes of contending next season. Add in other moves such as re-signing Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams, plus the free agent additions of Dorian Finney-Smith and Clint Capela, and the Rockets have put themselves in a position to challenge the top of the West.
While there is no doubt that the Rockets added immense talent this offseason, their roster isn’t necessarily ideal. Former Grizzlies VP of Basketball Operations John Hollinger recently went on The Zach Lowe Show and discussed the biggest hole on Houston’s roster.
“I mean, there are no real wings on this team,” Hollinger said. “And there is one point guard that they trust.”
Lowe then pushed back and asked Hollinger what he would consider Tari Eason, Dorian Finney-Smith and Amen Thompson. While those three will likely play for Houston on the wing next season, Hollinger replied that if you were starting a team from scratch, those guys would all play the four.
Although Hollinger might not be completely right about the Rockets’ wing problem, he has a point about Houston’s roster construction. With so much emphasis on bigs and bigger forwards, the team is set to enter next season without much in the traditional wing department.
Still, the Rockets made these moves to try and take another step toward contention, and Ime Udoka will have plenty of options to work with next season.
