After missing the playoffs last season for the first time since the 2019-2- season, the Phoenix Suns were expected to make major changes to their roster this offseason, and that is exactly what they did.

Phoenix started their offseason by trading Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets for a trade package headlined by Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and the pick used to select Khaman Maluach in the 2025 draft.

The Suns also acquired Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets on draft night before selecting Malauch, Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea.

They then bought out Bradley Beal’s contract, allowing him to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers in free agency and officially leaving Devin Booker as the only member of their big three remaining, whom they awarded with a massive contract extension.

With these moves, the Suns have completely overhauled their roster as they are now looking to rebuild around Booker for the future as they try to become a contender once again.

Former Suns Guard Reveals Why Big 3 Failed

Of course, the Suns had high expectations over the last two seasons after creating their star trio of Booker, Durant and Beal.

Despite this, the trio struggled with injuries over the two seasons and even when they were healthy, they did not live up to their lofty expectations, causing Phoenix to dismantle their big three this offseason.

Recently, former Suns guard Vasilije Micic shared his thoughts on why Phoenix’s star trio failed and pointed out a major reason.

“That trio was just a beauty to watch. Why didn’t they succeed? It was a bit of everything. Issues with the coach, issues with working together, which I don’t even know what it was,” Micic said about the Suns’ big three. “Let’s say, self-sacrifice for the team, It disappeared and everything fell apart, but an unbelievably talented trio.”

While Micic made great points about how coaching issues and their inability to work together at times caused the star trio’s downfall, his main reason for their lack of success was due to their lack of self-sacrifice for the team.

Of course, all three of Durant, Booker and Beal play better with the ball in their hands and when three players like that are paired alongside each other, they must make sacrifices.

That was not the case in Phoenix as their star trio elected to try and play the way they did before joining forces, which ultimately led to their downfall and failure to live up to expectations despite being a talented trio.

Because of this, the Suns are now forced to begin a rebuild where they will now look to continue to build around Booker to become a contender in the West once again while both Durant and Beal head to new homes where they are expected to have a chance to win a title this season.
