Bucks shooting guard Gary Trent Jr. is expected to decline his $3.9MM player option for 2026/27 in order to become an unrestricted free agent, sources tell NBA insider Chris Haynes ( Twitter link).
According to Haynes, Trent is drawing interest from rival teams in search of outside shooting help.
A former second-round pick (38th overall in 2018), Trent just finished his eighth NBA season and second with Milwaukee. He’s coming off a down ’25/26 campaign in which his statistics (8.1 PPG, 1.2 APG, 1.0 RPG on .387/.360/.769 shooting) were at their lowest levels since he was a rookie.
While Trent has his flaws — he’s not a great rebounder, play-maker or defender — he has converted 38.7% of his 6.1 three-point attempts per game during his career and is still just 27 years old. He also a couple big playoff games for the Bucks in ’24/25 and averaged at least 11.0 PPG in each of the six seasons leading up to ’25/26.
A veteran with eight years of NBA experience projects to earn about $3.5MM on a minimum-salary contract next season — perhaps Trent will be able to do better than that, or at least get more total guaranteed money than he would have by exercising his option.
For what it’s worth, the Heat are known to be looking for outside shooting after reaching a trade to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo (and Bobby Portis) from the Bucks.
