Giannis Antetokounmpo’s arrival in Miami was supposed to be the start of a championship era, but only a few weeks into his first season with the Heat, questions about his future are already growing. Miami paid a huge price to get him, sending Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks, a pick swap and a second-round pick to Milwaukee. Early returns have been rough. The Heat sit at 2-5, and Antetokounmpo has been forced to carry most of the load. His individual numbers are strong. He is averaging 28.4 points, 12.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists through his first seven games. Still, the losing has put a spotlight on whether this partnership can last.
The biggest reason Antetokounmpo could leave is his contract. He is earning about $58.5 million this season and holds a player option worth roughly $62.8 million for 2027-28. That means he controls his own future. He can opt out next summer and become an unrestricted free agent, or he can stay put. Miami’s chance to lock him up comes soon. He becomes eligible on January 6, 2027 for either a four-year, $275 million deal if he opts out or a three-year, $214 million deal if he opts in. Reports have suggested he plans to sign once he is eligible, but by that date the Heat will have played 32 games. If those games look like the start of this season, Antetokounmpo may decide to wait instead of committing.
Miami’s front office is betting that the slow start is just growing pains. Antetokounmpo has said he understands the Heat’s culture and believes the team can make some noise once it gets on the right track. However, at 31 years old, he does not have years to wait on a rebuild. He chose Miami because he wanted to compete for another title right away, and anything less could push him to look elsewhere. Pat Riley built this roster around one goal, and the next two months could decide whether Antetokounmpo becomes the face of the franchise for years or one of the most expensive short stays in NBA history.
