Giannis Antetokounmpo explains why he doesn’t like working out with LeBron James

Giannis Antetokounmpo had a solid time in the offseason as he led the Greek basketball team to a bronze medal at the 2025 EuroBasket.

With EuroBasket 2025 concluded, Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected to shift his focus to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Considering the 2025-26 NBA season is less than a month away, Antetokounmpo will likely use the remainder of the offseason to prepare.

Several players use the opportunity to work out with other NBA stars. The same is true for Giannis, but there’s a unique reason why he never works out with Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James.

Giannis Antetokounmpo avoids working out with LeBron James because he is his opponent

Oftentimes, players are seen working out with current players in the league. However, the Greek Freak is against that.

After all, it could be a double-edged sword for the Bucks star as he will face off against the same players in a few months.

“I don’t like working with players who are playing right now. I want to work with young guys and with LeBron, for example. I could work with LeBron, but he’s still playing,” Antetokounmpo told Sports24.

He added: “I’ll see him in a month or two, and he’ll be my opponent.”

While that may seem strange to many, it’s a pretty solid reason to avoid working out with current players, even if it is LBJ, who will turn 41 years old this year.

Giannis Antetokounmpo loves working out with ‘retired’ players

So, does this mean that Giannis steers away from every NBA player in the summer? The answer is a resounding no.

Antetokounmpo is always open to working out with retired NBA players. In fact, he wants to be on the court with the recent Hall of Fame inductee, Carmelo Anthony.

“I like working with players who are retired. I think the next one is Carmelo Anthony. If I could work with Carmelo Anthony, I would love to,” Antetokounmpo stated.

With this logic, it’s safe to say that fans may witness a LeBron-Giannis workout session once the Lakers superstar bids farewell to the NBA.
