Giannis Antetokounmpo had his introductory Heat press conference today. Bobby Portis was also introduced and both answered questions from the media. The trade finally was approved on July 6th and fans will already begin to judge “Who won the trade?” Outside of whether Lebron joins the Heat or any other free agent the Heat sign, the biggest takeaway of the introduction of the press conference is this — Giannis’ health.
The main negative takeaway of the trade was that the Heat gave up too many players. The positive was that the Heat were acquiring one elite player and one expert bench player. From a marketing and branding standpoint, Giannis will have to average 65-70 games played during the next three to five seasons for the trade to give a return.
Taking the total amount of games played for Giannis, Bam and Tyler Herro since the 2019-2020 season, Bam leads all with an average of 69.85 games played. Giannis averaged 61.42 games played. Even if last season was removed, Giannis would only have averaged 65.66 games played. Tyler Herro averaged the lowest at 56.28 games played.
The allure of the Heat team on offense and defense is the ability of teams to factor in the offensive and defensive productivity of Bam and Giannis. If the two players could average 68 or so games played, the Heat will win 55-60 games per season.
Last season, the NBA investigated conflicting reports between Giannis and the Bucks on his readiness. In the court of public opinion, that doubt has flourished into whether Giannis can still be an elite player. Giannis can say over and over that he’s healthy, but the proof will be if he can play most of the season.
The problems between Giannis and the Milwaukee Bucks hurt Giannis in the public eye. Giannis needs to act as the face of the NBA this season (whether or not the Heat make the NBA Finals.) Giannis has to display a positive working relationship with the Heat front office and the team.
No one will ever know specifically what the Bucks management did to hurt Giannis leaving. That matter has past and the only issue now is if Giannis can give the NBA a positive business outcome. When Lebron James first came to the Heat, he was villified. As per Chalmers interview in March 2024 in “The Big Podcast with Shaq,” Chalmers said that James embraced the villain role when he came to the Heat.
Giannis will find that there is no way to reverse his public persona for when he won the 2021 NBA Championship. He must embrace the “villain role” — to know that the only person he needs to satisfy is himself and his family. He will be doubted, vilified, laughed at and made into a meme. He is now on a team and with a coaching staff that have experience in helping players achieve their potential.
