The 2025 NBA Draft class has been superb in the first week of the 2025-26 NBA season. Despite all the fantastic players from the class, third overall pick VJ Edgecombe has been the biggest standout, especially with his landmark debut for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Most people knew that the 2025 NBA Draft class was filled with immense talent. However, everyone knew that first overall pick Cooper Flagg was ready to take the next step to become a star almost immediately.

Flagg has been a bit underwhelming during his first few games. On the other hand, second overall pick Dylan Harper has been decent. However, the third overall pick, VJ Edgecombe, has been the most impressive rookie out of the class.

With his performances, Edgecombe has impressed the NBA community, including former All-Star Gilbert Arenas. This has led people like Arenas to speak about Edgecombe’s perfect fit with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Arenas believes Edgecombe is in the right place with Philly

The 76ers are 2-0 to start the season with close wins over the Boston Celtics and the Charlotte Hornets. In the game against Boston, Tyrese Maxey scored 40 points, but Edgecombe stood out alongside him with 34 points and seven rebounds.

That was Edgecombe’s first NBA regular-season game, which is now recognized as one of the greatest NBA debuts ever. It was the most points in an NBA debut since the legendary Wilt Chamberlain.

He came back down to earth in the second game against the Hornets with a 15-point night. Despite the relatively quiet game in points, Edgecombe still contributed well with six rebounds and eight assists. The Bahamian guard looks ready to become a star, and the 76ers might be the perfect spot for him, according to Arenas.

“If he had been with the Spurs, him and Castle on the same team? I like him here. You got an offense that revolves around guard play now. Even if your big man is there [Victory Wembanyama, because he’s so dominant, they have to focus on him, and they get to go downhill,” Arenas said on The Arena.

“Watching him over the years, he’s electrifying. You got a real impressive backcourt here, and I like it… They’re different. You’re talking about speed, athleticism, and he plays defense. You got some real impressive backcourt here. I like it.”

Edgecombe can become the 76ers’ next star

The 76ers are loaded with talent, but they have two distinct duos of different age groups. Joel Embiid and Paul George are the biggest stars on the roster. However, they are in their 30s, which can limit their long-term viability, especially with George.

With Edgecombe and Maxey, both players in their early 20s, they can be the backcourt of the future and serve as the building blocks for this 76ers team. Of course, they will still want to maximize Embiid’s window, considering he is the team’s best player.

However, they can rest easy, knowing that Edgecombe and Maxey are handling the long-term future. Edgecombe, in particular, has superstar potential. He has the attitude of a star who wants to keep working to earn his keep. With his mix of natural scoring ability and defensive intensity, he could become one of the best shooting guards in the league.

It will be challenging, but Edgecombe is known for overcoming the odds. As long as he keeps working hard, anything is possible with his ceiling as a player.
