Greg Anthony spreads buyout rumor about his son

Greg Anthony had a somewhat awkward moment on NBATV Monday as he spread a buyout rumor about his own son.

Anthony was part of NBATV’s free agency coverage Monday afternoon, and at one point brought up his son, Memphis Grizzlies guard Cole Anthony. The elder Anthony dropped a rumor that his son might be in line for a buyout from the Grizzlies.

“I don’t know that Cole Anthony will be there. There’s a possibility that he could be bought out,” Anthony said about his son.

The rest of the panel got a pretty good laugh out of Anthony spreading that rumor. The speculation had started over the weekend, when Marc Stein of The Stein Line revealed that the Grizzlies have looked into trying to trade Cole.

Sure enough, ESPN’s Shams Charania reportedly shortly after that the Grizzlies were working on a buyout with Anthony after signing Jaren Jackson Jr. to a new contract.

The Grizzlies recently acquired Anthony as part of the trade that send Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic. He does not appear to be in their long-term plans, and his $13.1 million salary was more of a makeweight to facilitate that trade.

Anthony never quite broke through as a full-time starter with the Magic, even though he averaged 16.3 points per game in his second full season. He was mostly relegated to the bench for Orlando last season, averaging 9.4 points in 18.4 minutes per game.
