Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant has struggled to begin the 2025–26 season. The 26-year-old has labored through his first 11 games, posting 18.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 8.1 assists per game while shooting just 35.2% from the field and 16.7% from beyond the arc. While Morant is known for his explosive ability to attack the basket and create open looks for teammates, he has been shooting the ball with glaring inefficiency.

Adding to the rocky start, Morant was suspended one game earlier this month for conduct detrimental to the team after making frustrated postgame comments aimed at the Grizzlies’ coaching staff. The incident has only intensified scrutiny around Morant’s leadership and performance as Memphis looks to find its stride.

During Saturday’s road game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Morant got off to a promising start. In just six minutes of action, he scored seven points on two field-goal attempts and three free throws, while adding one rebound and two assists. However, with 6:01 remaining in the first quarter, Morant exited the game and headed to the locker room. The Grizzlies held a 17–14 lead at the time of the injury.

Moments later, the team announced that Morant had been ruled out for the remainder of the game due to right calf soreness. “Ja Morant (RT Calf Soreness) will not return tonight at Cleveland,” the team posted on X.

This is an unfortunate development for Morant, as injuries have continued to derail a career once defined by explosive promise.

Drafted second overall by the Grizzlies in 2019, Morant is a two-time All-Star, a 2020 Rookie of the Year and an All-NBA selection. He has been unavailable for most of the past two seasons, which has limited Memphis’ ceiling and raised questions about his long-term role as the face of the franchise.

His aggressive, high-flying playstyle relies heavily on speed, verticality and constant rim attacks, making him one of the league’s most exciting players but also exposing him to frequent physical wear. This latest setback is unrelated to the ankle issues that kept him out for the entire preseason, adding another layer of concern. The Grizzlies cannot afford to lose him again, especially after entering Saturday with a 4–9 record and sitting 12th in the Western Conference.
