Grizzlies Announce Ja Morant Suffered Injury At Practice

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant is reportedly battling another injury heading into the new NBA season.

In a career thus far that's never seen him play more than 67 games (which was his Rookie of the Year campaign), the two-time All-Star is already looking at more missed time before 2025-26 even tips off.

Morant missed 32 games in 2024 and was limited to just nine total the year prior due to his lengthy suspension and season-ending shoulder injury.

Fortunately this latest setback isn't expected to be anything too, too serious. But we're also seeing an unfortunate pattern when it comes to one of the league's most dynamic and exciting guards.

Ja Morant injured in practice

According to a report from Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal, "Ja Morant suffered a sprained left ankle in practice yesterday. He is considered week-to-week."

The injury reportedly came just one day before the Grizzlies preseason tune-up vs. the Detroit Pistons on Monday night, and could put his status for Game 1 in jeopardy when the team hosts Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans on Oct. 22.

The 26-year-old All-NBA PG is coming off a season in which he averaged 23.2 points, 7.3 dimes and 4.1 rebounds per game to go along with 1.2 steals on D. And his absence is definitely a blow to an already beat up Memphis squad still in transition post-Taylor Jenkins firing.

NBA Twitter reacts to Monday's news

"we are so back (devastatingly)," Bleacher Report's Molly Morrison replied.

"Cursed franchise (don’t care if I’m overreacting)," a fan said.

"Basketball is actually awful," another user commented.

"I don’t know if I’m gonna be able to do this all season. Genuinely," a Memphis native shared.

"You just can't make this up. Grizzlies preseason has not even started yet and they are down 4 players: Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., Zach Edey [&] Brandon Clarke," another person posted.

"Bruh," a Grizzlies fan groaned.

Obviously, this is the last news anyone in Memphis wanted to read but things could always be worse. Here's to hoping Ja is able to get back on the court sooner rather than later once his ankle heals up.
