Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey had a strong NBA debut season last year. Selected ninth overall in the 2024 NBA Draft out of Purdue, Edey finished fifth in Rookie of the Year voting for his efforts during the 2024–25 season.
He made 66 appearances, including 55 starts, after earning a spot in the starting lineup. The 23-year-old big man averaged 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks while shooting 58.0% from the field and 70.9% from the free-throw line.
Edey’s size and rim protection gave Memphis a reliable interior presence, and his efficiency around the basket made him a dependable option in the paint.
Edey missed time to begin the 2025–26 season recovering from offseason surgery on his left ankle. He had only appeared in four games prior to Monday’s matchup against the Denver Nuggets. He got off to a solid start in his first six minutes of action, collecting one rebound and scoring two points.
However, Edey left the game early and immediately headed back to the locker room in the first quarter. Moments later, the Grizzlies announced he had suffered a head injury and was doubtful to return. “Zach Edey (Head) is doubtful to return tonight vs. Denver,” the team wrote on X. It remains unclear when Edey sustained the injury or how severe it is.

This is an unfortunate development, as Edey had only just returned nine days ago and was playing in his fifth game back. The Grizzlies are already shorthanded without All-Star point guard Ja Morant, and the team’s hopes for salvaging the season continue to fade.
Edey’s presence in the paint gives the Grizzlies a dependable rebounder and shot blocker, and his ability to finish efficiently around the rim helped stabilize the offense. Losing him again means heavier minutes for forward Jaren Jackson Jr. and backup center Jock Landale, while the team leans on smaller lineups that struggle to match up physically.
For a young big man still building consistency, missing more time could slow his growth and limit the chemistry Memphis needs to climb back into the playoff hunt.
