Memphis Grizzlies fans are still anticipating Zach Edey’s season debut following his offseason surgery. The second-year center went under the knife in June to address laxity in his left ankle. The team announced in September that Edey could miss the first two months of the season as he recovers from surgery.
Edey, who averaged 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks as a rookie last season, has been working hard behind the scenes as he prepares to return to action. On Friday, the Grizzlies announced a crucial update regarding the 23-year-old’s road to recovery — one that indicates that Edey is closing in on his highly anticipated season debut.
In September, roughly three months after Edey’s offseason surgery, the Grizzlies cleared the former Purdue Boilermakers star to begin ramping up basketball activities. They gave him a timetable of six to nine weeks, which suggested a potential return in mid- to late-November.
On Nov. 7, Edey took a significant step in his road to recovery. The Grizzlies assigned him to the Memphis Hustle , their NBA G League affiliate, to take part in their practice. The No. nine overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft was then listed as doubtful to play in Wednesday’s game against the Boston Celtics. He ultimately missed that matchup, but it was a step in the right direction.
On Friday, the Grizzlies announced some promising news on Edey. For the first time this season, the 7-foot-4 center has been upgraded to questionable to play for Saturday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

It appears that there is now a legitimate chance that Edey will make his much-anticipated season debut on Saturday. There is still no guarantee that Edey will play against the Cavs, but this significant development indicates that he is getting closer.
In other injury news for the Grizzlies, Ja Morant was not on the injury report for the Cavs game. He missed Tuesday’s loss to the Celtics, but is now slated to return on Saturday. Rookie Cedric Coward, however, is dealing with foot soreness and could potentially sit out against Cleveland.
As for Edey, if he ends up missing Saturday’s game again, his next chance to play would be on Tuesday against the San Antonio Spurs.
