Grizzlies entertaining trade offers for Ja Morant

The Ja Morant situation in Memphis is very much in play.

The Grizzlies are listening on Morant and would consider moving the star guard ahead of the February 5 trade deadline, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported. Multiple teams have expressed interest, and Memphis is weighing whether its long-term path is better served by keeping Morant or pivoting more fully around Jaren Jackson Jr. and the team’s growing young core.

If the Grizzlies do pull the trigger, the focus would be on acquiring young players and draft capital rather than veteran help, per Charania.

Morant, 26, remains one of the league’s most recognizable guards, but his standing has shifted over the past two seasons.

Injuries, including a shoulder issue that wiped out most of last year, have limited his availability, and he has not consistently looked like the same explosive player who won Most Improved Player honors in 2022. Off-court issues that resulted in multiple league suspensions have also complicated his trajectory.

League executives have quietly questioned the current market for max-level, offense-first point guards, especially in a league that increasingly prioritizes size and defensive versatility.

The timing is notable. Atlanta just moved Trae Young for a modest return, and that deal is expected to influence how teams value similar stars.

Memphis is not signaling a full teardown, however. Jackson remains off the table, and the organization believes it has a strong foundation regardless of which direction it ultimately chooses.
