Hakeem Olajuwon had more than just power. He brought a mix of strength, finesse and court sense that changed what people expected from a center. During his peak years with the Houston Rockets in the mid-1990s, Olajuwon ran both ends of the floor.
He took rosters that weren't loaded with stars and turned them into championship teams through pure skill. His game in the post showed up fast. "The Dream Shake" originated from footwork and counters that kept defenders off-balance. Most big men couldn't figure it out.
But some legends made things harder. Olajuwon faced every elite center in his era, and a few of them forced him to switch things up. When he was asked, during a recent appearance on Boardroom with Kevin Durant, who gave him the most problems. He had an answer ready.
"Shaq, Patrick, David. Those guys, I mean the shot blockers…. Imagine, fast and strong. So you have to play a different kind of style where you face up more, like bring them outside. Check the lateral movement," Olajuwon said.
Those three names weren't random picks. Each one built a reputation on defense that matched what Olajuwon brought to the other end.
Shaquille O'Neal was more than size and strength, especially in his younger years. He moved well for someone his size, blocked shots and altered plenty more. He never made first-team All-Defense, but three Second Team nods showed what he could do.
Patrick Ewing stayed consistent for years. His length and timing kept him in the conversation as one of the best defenders in the league. He finished top three in Defensive Player of the Year voting three times and landed on three All-Defensive Second Teams.
David Robinson might have been the most complete. He won Defensive Player of the Year in 1992 and came in second three other times. His size, speed and awareness stood out at the position.
Still, Olajuwon was on a different level. Going up against him took work, and stopping him required the same kind of focus he used when guarding those legends.
