Jonathan Kuminga has played well in his first three games for the Atlanta Hawks. The franchise traded for the young forward ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline. However, Kuminga's left knee inflammation has bothered him, keeping him from making his Hawks debut.
Fortunately for the team, Kuminga's time off paid off, and he provided a spark when he became available. During his three-game stretch, the 2022 champion has averaged 21.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists.
He's shown promise, giving fans something to get excited about. Additionally, the Hawks have won in every game that Kuminga has played in.
Ahead of the Hawks' contest against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, the team announced an update on Kuminga. The 23-year-old will not suit up against the Bucks and has been downgraded to out. Initially, the forward was listed as questionable due to his knee issues.

Jonathan Kuminga (left knee inflammation): Out https://t.co/vSLlWsz6db
It has been a rocky season for Kuminga. Before the start of the 2025-26 campaign, he was in a standoff with the Golden State Warriors regarding his contract, as he was a restricted free agent.
Eventually, he signed a two-year, $48.5 million extension with the Warriors. After a strong 13-game stretch, Kuminga was excluded from the rotation. He only played 20 games for Golden State before the team traded him to the Hawks for Kristaps Porzingis.
It's a trade that Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. does not regret. Dunleavy appeared on Tim Kawakami's "The TK Show" on Wednesday. He was asked about his thoughts on the trade, since Kuminga has played three games for his new team. Porzingis, however, has only played once and is dealing with an illness.
“I haven’t watched anything yet,” Dunleavy said on keeping tabs on Kuminga. “We’ve been really busy with stuff here in a myriad of different ways. I think with JK all along, I mean, the talent is there. This guy is a good basketball player when he plays the right way, when he does the right things. We wish him the best.”
Right now, Dunleavy said that the Warriors are focused on their talent in the team. The executive stands by his decision and says it was "the right thing to do at the time." The trade has benefited Kuminga, since he's now getting the minutes he believes he should have with Golden State.
Kuminga will meet his former teammates before the season ends. On March 21, Atlanta will host the Warriors, and it's an interesting matchup during the final stretch of the campaign.
