Despite an ongoing search for a President of Basketball Operations to pair with newly appointed general manager Onsi Saleh, the NBA Draft is a little over 24 hours away, and there has been no news on that front. It appears the Hawks are perfectly fine with Saleh calling the shots, and he met with the Atlanta media on Monday to discuss a variety of offseason topics.

Among them was the future of star point guard Trae Young. This time last year, Young’s future in Atlanta looked cloudy at best, as he entered the second-to-last year of his contract. However, the emergence of Dyson Daniels and Zaccharie Risacher has the Hawks in a much better position than many expected, and Young appears devoted to seeing this thing all the way through, according to several reports.

Now, it’s up to the Hawks’ brass, and Onsi Saleh made it clear on Monday that Trae Young is part of the Hawks’ future.

“We’re locked in with Trae.” Saleh said. “We talked last year, we’re just locked into next season, ready to move forward and be the best team we can possibly be moving forward. And I think a lot of it is leadership from last season that went probably unnoticed to the common eye, like the way that he helped develop our young guys and make them better was significant.”

Obviously, Saleh didn’t mention anything about potential contract negotiations, but it certainly feels like the Hawks would like to keep Trae Young in Atlanta long-term, which should be a top priority this offseason.

Young didn’t have the most efficient season scoring the basketball. It was his worst shooting season since his rookie campaign. However, whatever he lacked in that department, he more than made up for as a playmaker, averaging a career-high 11.6 assists per game, which led the league.

Beyond that, as Saleh mentioned, Young seemed to make massive strides as a leader. The drama that surrounded the locker room in years past completely subsided, and there’s no arguing the kind of impact he had on the young guys that now look like building blocks moving forward.
