Hawks waive two players after procedural signings

The Hawks signed Javan Johnson and Dwight Murray Jr. on Tuesday. By Wednesday, both were gone.

It was all part of the plan. Atlanta announced it has waived the two guards just a day after adding them, a procedural move that clears the way for each to be eligible for Exhibit 10 bonuses worth up to $85,300 if they spend at least 60 days with the College Park Skyhawks, the team’s G League affiliate.

Johnson, 26, went undrafted in 2023 after stints at Troy, Iowa State and DePaul. He played most of his first two pro seasons in the G League with Santa Cruz, averaging 13.8 points in 49 games last year, while also spending time in Puerto Rico. College Park acquired his returning rights in a three-team trade earlier this summer.

Murray, 25, also went undrafted in 2023 and has since played overseas and with the Skyhawks. The Georgia native averaged 9.0 points and 5.1 assists in 29 starts for College Park last season.

Both now have a clear path back to College Park as returning-rights players, with the Exhibit 10 bonuses waiting if they stick.
