PHOENIX — Days after being waived, the Phoenix Suns are bringing back forward Haywood Highsmith.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Highsmith has agreed to a one-year deal to return to the Suns, bringing experience, defensive versatility and another capable wing to the roster.

The forward first joined Phoenix last season, signing a deal in February. He appeared in seven regular-season games for Phoenix, averaging 5.4 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.0 assist in 13 minutes per game. He also shot 52.2% from the field and 57.1% from 3-point range.

The small sample size doesn’t suggest Highsmith will suddenly become a major offensive option, but his physicality and ability to defend multiple positions allow him to contribute without needing to score. His ability to space the floor also gives the Suns another option when their primary scorers draw defensive attention.

Beyond his defensive versatility, Highsmith’s return also gives him a chance to build on the limited time he spent with Phoenix last season. Highsmith joined the team after dealing with a knee injury and had limited time to establish himself.

A full season with the team gives him a better opportunity to carve out a more consistent role.
