The San Antonio Spurs were tempted to part ways with the second overall pick of this summer’s NBA Draft. Instead, they used it to select Dylan Harper from Rutgers, another young and talented guard.
One of the big questions for the San Antonio Spurs entering the 2025-26 NBA campaign is how they’ll handle their guard logjam since they also have reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox. Because of this, there has been speculation that one of them could eventually become the odd man out.
“(Harper) has some (Manu) Ginobili to his offensive game,” an anonymous Western Conference scout told ESPN’s Jeremy Woo. “If the 3-point shot ever becomes a true weapon (for him), he makes Fox expendable and gives San Antonio a nice trade asset.”
“Harper’s pick-and-roll prowess and crafty, powerful style of play made him the choice for the Spurs, who have been optimizing for additional playmaking around Victor Wembanyama moving forward,” Woo added in his column.
In the same article, ESPN’s Jeremy Woo noted that Carter Bryant is viewed as the player who has the potential to become the biggest draft steal in the 2025 class. The 19-year-old Arizona product was the 14th overall pick.
“(Bryant) will turn into an impact wing defender that can make 3s and be a part of their core,” one Eastern Conference scout said. “We’ll look back in several years while the Spurs are winning big, and people will mention them drafting Castle at 4 (in 2024) and Bryant at 14 to pair defensively with Victor as (draft) steals.”
Bryant averaged 7.0 points and 3.3 rebounds per game during the Summer League in Las Vegas. His best performance was notching 16 points with four three-pointers against the Charlotte Hornets in his final match.
