The San Antonio Spurs have been aggressive in reshaping their roster around Victor Wembanyama in the past few years, as they plan to return to the postseason sooner rather than later.
According to NBA champion Richard Jefferson, this is not a coincidence, as there have been rumors that Wembanyama reportedly urged the franchise early in his rookie NBA season to surround him with more talent.
“There are rumors in the basketball universe that very early on, Wemby told the people in San Antonio, I need some more help. It wasn’t like a rookie, he’s playing, we’ll see who we draft. He’s like I need better basketball players around me. Now, mind you, he is the type of player that you move quickly on right like, Zion Williamson, and they put a team around him,” Jefferson said on the Road Trippin’ podcast.
“When you’re 19 and you walk in there and you’re like go get me some help, they’re like, ‘Hold on, big fella, we got you. Hey De’Aaron, Chris Paul, they brought in help.’ He’s got a good roster around him, so I’m not questioning his level of competitiveness,” he continued.
The San Antonio Spurs will likely be without Jeremy Sochan at the start of the 2025-26 NBA campaign, as the 22-year-old forward injured his wrist during a scrimmage in last Thursday’s practice.
Sochan only managed to play 54 regular season games in 2024-25 due to injuries. He was the San Antonio Spurs’ second-best rebounder behind Victor Wembanyama, as he averaged 11.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists on 53.5 percent shooting from the field.
In other news, De’Aaron Fox is questionable to play on opening night, as the San Antonio Spurs guard sustained a hamstring injury over the offseason.
