Before the 2024-25 season began, many doubted whether rookie coach JJ Redick could handle the immense pressure of coaching a storied franchise like the LA Lakers.
However, with all pre-season analysis predicting the team as a mere Play-In Tournament contingent, Redick has exceeded expectations, guiding the "Purple and Gold" to an impressive 10-5 start. Reflecting on his early success, Trevor Ariza offered him a unique backhanded compliment, explaining why his "a**hole" former teammate might be the perfect candidate to take up the Lakers' head coach job.
Having shared the court with rookie JJ during the 2006-07 season on the Orlando Magic, Trevor highlighted the 40-year-old's unwavering dedication and boldness in pursuing excellence. Speaking on the "Run It Back" show, the 2009 NBA Champion emphasized Redick's intense approach and flair towards the game, which has brought him early success.
"He's the perfect a**hole. What I mean by that is he's so confident in what he does because of his preparation or that he had as a player that he's confident in his ability to get anything done and as a player, as a teammate," Ariza said. "You attract to guys who put in the work and are confident."
"JJ is the perfect a**hole. I think he's just what the Lakers need."

Looking ahead, the Lakers have a tough schedule. Within their next 12 games, they face six championship-caliber teams: the Denver Nuggets, Sacramento Kings, OKC Thunder, and Golden State Warriors. While the road ahead might be tough, the retired forward expressed the confidence that Redick's adaptability and resilience will only help him lead the Lakers to shine better in high-pressure matches.
"I think he's great; I think he's just what the Lakers need. Going forward, as he gets more games under his belt, he gets into more situations," Ariza concluded. "I just think he's going to get better."
Some might argue that the former Blue Devil rarely achieved any accolade as a player — no championships, All-Star appearances, or All-NBA selections — but his sharp basketball IQ and boldness on the court have always stood out. Moreover, these traits have only translated into his coaching style, earning him praise for bringing out the best in his marquee as well as role players.
Although the LA Lakers' winning streak recently ended in heartbreaking fashion against the Paolo Banchero-less Magic, Redick's ability to instill consistency and focus in his team has been commendable. As the Lakers prepare to face their toughest challenge — the Denver Nuggets next — Redick's true mettle as a coach will be on full display.
