The Hornets have officially waived veteran point guard Spencer Dinwiddie, the team announced in a press release. The move comes just three months after Dinwiddie signed a one-year, fully guaranteed deal with Charlotte.
Dinwiddie, 32, will still collect his full $3.63 million salary, while the Hornets take on $2.29 million in dead money if he clears waivers, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The decision ends a short, uneventful stint for the 11-year guard, who appeared in two preseason games and totaled six points and six assists in 30 minutes. Charlotte was outscored by 20 points in that span.
Dinwiddie averaged 11.0 points and 4.4 assists last season in Dallas, holding steady to his career numbers while helping fill the gap after the Luka Doncic trade.
The Hornets signed him in July to bolster point guard depth behind LaMelo Ball and Tre Mann, both of whom dealt with injuries last season. But with both healthy and a roster crunch looming, Dinwiddie became the odd man out.
Charlotte now has 14 guaranteed contracts and appears ready to keep Pat Connaughton, who was once viewed as a potential cut candidate.
