Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet intends to sign a two-year, $50 million contract to stay with the franchise, with a player option in 2026-27, sources tell ESPN

VanVleet quickly became the steadying presence for a team full of promising talent. This extension solidifies the Rockets’ direction, signaling that the organization sees VanVleet not just as a veteran presence, but as a foundational building block for the franchise’s future.

His leadership helped bring clarity and purpose to a roster featuring rising stars like Amen Thompson, Alperen Şengün, and Jabari Smith Jr.

On the court, he provided the floor spacing, playmaking, and defense that the Rockets sorely lacked in previous seasons. He will be counted on this season to be the general to help get Kevin Durant the ball.

Defensively, VanVleet and Durant also offer a strategic pairing. VanVleet is small but scrappy, known for his ability to dig into ball-handlers and force turnovers. Durant, on the other hand, brings switchability and rim protection. He can guard multiple positions and erase mistakes with his length.

Together, they can anchor a unit where VanVleet pressures at the point of attack, while Durant serves as the backline disruptor. The two don’t need to be lockdown defenders as they just need to raise the team’s defensive IQ and communication. Their veteran presence ensures a higher level of discipline and accountability on that end of the floor.
