On Thursday, the Golden State Warriors lost by 51 points to the Memphis Grizzlies. Entering their Saturday matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, there was definitely a sense of urgency.
Draymond Green was scratched from the lineup with a last-minute injury, and sophomore Trayce Jackson-Davis, who is battling a back injury of his own, was called up to start the game. On top of that, a 20-minute delay interrupted the first quarter as there was an issue with the netting on one of the rims.
Overall, things did not look like they were going to go Golden State's way.
However, Stephen Curry took over late, finishing with 31 points on efficient shooting. The Dubs held their own on defense, too, limiting Anthony Edwards to only 19 points and holding the Wolves to 41 percent shooting from the floor. The Warriors would hang on to win, 113-103.
After being handed their worst loss of the season in the game prior, the Warriors needed to get their minds right, and Jackson-Davis highlighted how they did that.
"Obviously you're upset during the game, after the game you're upset, but this is the NBA," said Jackson-Davis of the Warriors' ability to recover. "You got 82 games in a season. We actually did some team bonding on the plane and getting the vibes right last night, and I think that showed. That's our motto: 'Just Us,' and we got to keep playing for each other."
He finished with 15 points, matching his season high, and added nine rebounds and two blocks in his surprise start. Rudy Gobert was able to pour in 18 points on Jackson-Davis, but overall he was one of the Warriors' best players in a must-win game.
The Warriors, amid their recent cold streak, have been written off as a title contender, but Jackson-Davis thinks they have the talent to go on a deep run.
"We have a great team and we just gotta play at a high level," he finished.
The Warriors will have a chance to build on their momentum on Monday as they take on the Indiana Pacers at the Chase Center. Indiana will be coming off a game the night before against the Sacramento Kings, so Golden State will be poised to kick off a multi-game win streak.
