How Jayson Tatum’s Mom Was His Biggest Support During Injury Comeback

A year ago, Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles, an injury that broke the spirit of the Boston Celtics star. What followed was Tatum’s strict recovery routine, and his mother, Brandy Cole, was there every step of the way.

The Celtics star returned to the court just 10 months after the injury. March 6, 2026, saw Tatum return to face the Dallas Mavericks, Tatum took the floor for the first time this season. Two days later, he received a text message from his mother stating that she was going to attend his next game.

“I just wanted to make sure that he always had some place to look because people don’t realize that the mental part of coming back is just as difficult as the physical,” Cole said about her decision to attend her son’s game.

Tatum later revealed that during his second game back from injury, he often looked at his mom in the stands and found her crying while watching him play.

Clearly, Cole’s presence meant everything to the mother-son pair. She went on to speak about how she wanted to be the space he looked to if he felt pressure.

“I just wanted him to have a place to look if he needed to just calm down, if he needed reassurance, if he struggled…”

Brandy noted that she would tell Tatum that no one would expect him to return to top form immediately, and that he didn’t need to feel pressure to perform at his usual MVP level.

Brandy’s advice seems to have worked, as Tatum scored 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists in his very first game back. While this is not what one would expect from prime Tatum, his mother told had him not to worry.

“If you struggle in this game, it’s fine.”

Tatum came back to play 16 regular-season games and notch six playoff appearances, all with the support of Brandy Cole.

Jayson Tatum’s mom reveals how the birth of her son changed her life

Brandy Cole had Tatum when she was just 19 years old. At the height of her academics, she was an elite student. However, despite the worries that surrounded her future as a single mother, she pulled through for Tatum.

“From the moment I saw him, I was just obsessed, and he just changed my life.”

Since then, she has done everything in her power to secure a future for her son.

“It’s been my most important role, my most rewarding, my most challenging.”

With his mother by his side, Tatum managed to average 22.2 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 5.7 assists in the games that he has played in the 2026 season so far.

Tatum will have yet another offseason to get stronger and get comfortable using both feet. With him returning, the Celtics will once again open their quest for the title.
