Mark Cuban is well-known for being a vocal member of the Dallas Mavericks ownership group. He has also been influential, as he was instrumental in calling out Shaquille O’Neal’s free throws in the past. Now, he has a similar effect on young superstar Anthony Edwards.
In Saturday’s game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Boston Celtics, the main story was the duel between Anthony Edwards and Jaylen Brown. They were phenomenal for their teams, but it was Edwards who came out victorious.
Amidst all the chaos, one aspect of Edwards’ performance that almost went unnoticed was a shift in his free-throw routine. Mark Cuban is a former principal owner and current minority owner of the Dallas Mavericks, and he is quite well-known for being vocal about basketball.
In the past, he and the Mavericks pointed out a part of Shaquille O’Neal’s free-throw routine that needed to be changed. Recently, Cuban also called out Edwards for taking an extra step when he shoots free throws, so the young superstar removed that part of his routine.
On an episode of Road Trippin’ when Cuban was the guest, he pointed out that Edwards was not legally shooting free throws. He tended to step over the line, which should have been called for a violation.
Cuban pointed that out, which was a valid observation, even if some people disagreed. Since many people were exposed to the information because of Cuban, Edwards took notice when he saw it on social media or when it was brought up to him.
It seems Cuban got his wish, as Edwards has switched up his free-throw routine for the season. He is now taking his shots farther from the line so there will be no controversy. It was better to get ahead of the issue, so Edwards took action. This was a major change, but he just kept going as a top player ahead of the 2025-26 season.
“Some famous guy went on Instagram or went on a podcast and was talking about my free throws, and he brought it to the attention of everybody, so I had to change it. Now the refs are saying, ‘You can’t step over the line.’ So I had to change my whole (routine). I think it was the old owner of the Mavs.”
Anthony Edwards on eliminating the step on his free throw (spoiler it’s Mark Cuban’s fault)

“I’m getting used to my new free throws, it’s no excuse, I got to make them. That’s the reason, if I don’t know it’s going in or not, so I got to get used to… It’s hard, but like as much as I’ll be in the gym, it shouldn’t be that hard, so like I try to shoot like 200 free throws a day.”
Who do you think is most likely to be traded, and where?
While it may seem like an inconsequential change, Edwards’ switch-up with his routine shows how much he works on his game. He is one of the players who has made massive improvements during the summer, as evidenced by his growth as a three-point shooter.
Early in his career, he was willing to take threes, but he did not make them as often as he does today. Nowadays, Edwards is one of the league’s most prolific shooters, as evidenced by leading the league in made threes in the 2024-25 season.
With his pivot in his free-throw routine, Edwards is adding another feather in his cap. He is always working on his game to improve and help the Timberwolves. They have the potential to surprise people this season, but only if Edwards improves his game. The change might have been made because of Cuban’s rant, but Edwards is always willing to work hard.
