Learn more about Durant's life and career:
Kevin Wayne Durant was born Sept. 29, 1988, in Washington, D.C., to Wanda Durant and Wayne Pratt. His parents divorced when he was an infant, and his father was out of his life until age 13.
He played AAU basketball in the Maryland area. A mentor of his, Charles Craig, was murdered at age 35. That inspired Durant to begin wearing jersey No. 35. He was the second-best high school prospect in 2006 and committed to the University of Texas before his senior season in high school.
Durant played during the "one-and-done" era of college basketball. In his lone season as a Longhorn, he averaged 25.8 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. He won the Wooden Award and the Naismith College Player of the Year Award. He led Texas to a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament and scored 27 and 30 points in two games. The Longhorns fell in the round of 32 to USC.
After their tournament exit, Durant opted for the NBA Draft, and Texas later retired his No. 35 jersey.
Durant was selected second overall in the 2007 NBA Draft, behind center Greg Oden, by the Seattle SuperSonics. He averaged 20.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 80 games as a rookie en route to the NBA Rookie of the Year award.
In 2008, the Sonics relocated and became the Oklahoma City Thunder. It was there that he linked up with future superstars Russell Westbrook and James Harden in forming a young, exciting perennial contender.
The Thunder made it to the Western Conference finals four times with Durant. They reached the NBA Finals in 2011-12 but lost to the Miami Heat in five games.
In 2013-14, Durant broke Michael Jordan's record of consecutive games with 25 points or more with 41 straight. He averaged 32.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game on his way to winning league MVP.
Rumors of a power struggle with Westbrook and the numerous playoff failures led Durant to free agency after the 2015-16 season.
In 2016, Durant shocked the sports world by signing with the Golden State Warriors, who were coming off a season in which they broke the NBA record for wins in a season with a 73-9 record. Superstar guard Stephen Curry was the reigning league MVP, and the Warriors became one of the most feared teams the league had ever seen.
The Warriors won the next two NBA titles. In Durant's third and final season with the Dubs, they were upset by the Toronto Raptors in the NBA Finals. Durant suffered a torn Achilles in those Finals and missed the entire 2019-20 season.
Durant then signed a four-year deal worth nearly $195 million with the Brooklyn Nets knowing he was going to miss the first season. The Nets teamed him up with Kyrie Irving and eventually James Harden. Durant came back strong, averaging 26.9, 29.9 and 29.7 points per game in parts of three seasons.
The Nets won just one playoff series with Durant, though, and he asked to be dealt to the Phoenix Suns in February 2023. Although the Suns didn't win a playoff series with Durant in the fold, he averaged 27.1 and 26.6 points per game in two All-Star seasons with Phoenix. He was traded to the Houston Rockets before the 2025-26 season to lead a young, up-and-coming roster. His ability to score has them in the thick of the playoff race in the Western Conference.
