Expansion has always been one of the top goals of the NBA. They achieved part of it in 2019, when they founded the Basketball Africa League. This time, former San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker proposed an idea of having the league in Europe. Although there is already the EuroLeague, which is arguably the second-best basketball association behind the NBA.

Even with that, Parker believes that expanding into the European continent would be beneficial. Not just for the NBA, but for players aspiring to travel to the US and play in the best basketball league. Parker talked about the idea of expansion with China Daily.

He suggested that a collaboration between the NBA, EuroLeague and FIBA would make things work. All three basketball leagues hone the best talent across the globe, and working together could turn the idea into reality.

“I think it’s a great idea,” the San Antonio Spurs icon said. “If the EuroLeague, the NBA, and FIBA can find a way to work together to build a strong league. That will be amazing for European basketball.

Parker has taken the initiative to turn this idea into a fully fledged, operational league. In the past, he’s served as a mediator between the NBA and the EuroLeague.

“At the end of the day, we are talking and we are trying to go in the right direction. For me, as an owner of a French club, having an agreement between the three is the key to the success of European basketball,” he continued.

The four-time champion believes that it will happen, and it’s just a matter of time for all the parties involved.

“NBA Europe league for me is just a matter of time. They are coming, and it’s going to happen. The NBA is a very strong brand that is recognized around the world, and in Europe, everybody knows the NBA for sure. That’s why I think the NBA can be very helpful to help elevate the game’s profile in Europe.’
