Insider hints at favorite in Jonathan Kuminga pursuit

The Los Angeles Lakers aren't alone in their pursuit of former Golden State Warriors first-round pick Jonathan Kuminga.

The two-way forward is one of the biggest names left at this point in free agency, and the Minnesota Timberwolves are also reportedly keeping tabs on him.

That said, Kuminga's financial aspirations have thrown a wrench in the plans of multiple teams, and they certainly won't help the Timberwolves' case.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Lakers can offer him the most money, not to mention an opportunity to get a bigger deal in the future.

Jonathan Kuminga prefers to play for the Lakers

“I think Kuminga has seemed to prefer going to the Lakers,” Fischer said. “They have the most opportunity to negotiate there. Minnesota is just limited to signing Kuminga to the taxpayer mid-level...The Lakers have been selling him on this vision of having him start next to Luka [Doncic]; they're going to have the spending power to reward him next year if all goes to plan. That's going to come to some type of conclusion soon.”

Kuminga is betting on himself and reportedly wants around $20 million a season, which is simply not realistic under current circumstances.

However, a season playing next to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves might be just what he needs to finally break out and drive up his value.

Kuminga has all the talent and potential in the world, but the production and consistency haven't been there, and no team will give him that much money until he proves he's actually worth it.

If only for no better option or clear path to making more money, it looks like Kuminga is the Lakers' to lose right now.
