VJ Edgecombe had his Michael Carter-Williams moment on Wednesday night.

The Philadelphia 76ers rookie Edgecombe lit the Internet on fire with an incredible debut against the Boston Celtics. Playing on the road at TD Garden in Boston, Mass., Edgecombe dropped 34 points on 13/26 shooting. He also added seven rebounds, three assists, and a steal to help lead the 76ers to an exciting 117-116 win over Boston.

Edgecombe scored 14 points in just the first quarter alone, which was the most first-quarter points in history by a player making his NBA debut. On top of that, Edgecombe’s 34 total points were the most scored in an NBA debut this century and the third-most all-time (behind only Wilt Chamberlain’s 43 in 1959 and Frank Selvy’s 35 in 1954).

Fans had some great reactions online to Edgecombe’s breathtaking NBA debut.

The 20-year-old guard Edgecombe was Philadelphia’s No. 3 overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft. But he had no trouble adjusting to NBA-level competition in his debut on Wednesday and combined for an incredible 74 points with backcourt partner Tyrese Maxey (who dropped 40 himself).

Philly has not had a lot to smile about recently amid the continuing injury headache with Joel Embiid (who played on Wednesday but scored just four points on 1/9 shooting) and the ineffectiveness of Paul George (who did not play on Wednesday due to knee surgery recovery). But with Maxey and Edgecombe now looking like the stars for the team this season, things are quickly looking up for the 76ers.
