If Rajon Rondo is not one of the best point guards in NBA history, then he is among the most underrated. He is a four-time all-star and won the league’s assist title three times. He was at the helm of the 2008 World Champion Boston Celtics. He rode LeBron James’ coattails to another title in 2020, and finished his career with 7,584 assists (15th all-time) and 1,518 steals (54th). A claim circulating around social media today is that he’s added to his career achievements, post-retirement, and is now the top-rated quarterback in flag football.
Rondo did play football at Eastern High School in Louisville, KY, before focusing on basketball at the college level. He has said he could have played in the NFL if he had chosen that path, but that’s the same thing everybody’s drunk uncle says at family barbeques, too. Rondo’s claim isn’t any more true just because he played another professional sport. He has incredible athleticism, but at the pro level in any league, so does every other player on the roster. It’s skill level that sets them apart.
As far as the claim on social media is concerned, there’s no evidence to back up the claim, and it has not been substantiated by any of flag football’s governing bodies. On Instagram, the USA Flag account tagged Rondo and commented on an image claiming Rondo is the best in the nation, saying, “We would love to see your skills in action!”
There is also a video of Rondo showing some of his “skills” circulating, and it’s him playing quarterback on a softball field, in what appears to be a pickup flag football game, or at the very best, a men’s league rec level game. Since it does not appear he is playing against the nation’s top talent, it’s easy to assume that he is not among the nation’s best. Even if he looks electric to some in these videos, it’s not much of a challenge to dominate weekend warriors.
This is akin to videos of NBA stars in an empty gym, hitting 100 three-pointers in a row. It’s impressive to those who never played the sport, but anyone who played varsity basketball knew at least one bench warmer on their high school team who could do the same thing. The challenge is equal to Tiger Woods making a five-foot putt in his prime. Rondo is an elite athlete, and as such, would look good playing against even the best flag football dads out there.
It’s my belief that the allegation was put forth by Rondo or someone close to him. Maybe he wants it to jump-start his flag football career, and he’s eyeing the Olympics. Maybe he thought it would be a fun, practical joke that gets everyone talking. This would be on brand for the former basketball star. Throughout his NBA career, Rondo was a bit of an enigma. Basketball’s Andy Kaufman, if you will.
One thing that is for certain, Rondo is not the best flag football quarterback in the country. He may not even be the best quarterback in his men’s league.
