With the New York Knicks parting ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau following their disappointing exit in the Eastern Conference Finals, all eyes are now on Jalen Brunson—the team’s undeniable leader and franchise cornerstone.
While the Knicks begin their search for a new head coach, there’s growing speculation around the fate of Rick Brunson, Jalen’s father and an assistant coach on the current staff. In most coaching transitions, new head coaches bring in their own staff. But with Jalen Brunson’s connection to his father, the Knicks might make an exception.
According to NBA insider Ian Begley, keeping Rick Brunson could be a strategic move for whoever takes the helm.
“I can’t see the Knicks forcing any coach to keep Brunson,” Begley wrote. “But I also don’t think they would have to force the issue. If you’re a new head coach and you want to connect with the face of your franchise, would you want to piss him off by firing his dad? It doesn’t strike me as a logical move.”
Rick Brunson joined the Knicks in 2022—the same summer his son Jalen Brunson signed a major free-agent deal. Since then, Jalen has become the heart of New York’s playoff success, making it clear that any coaching decisions will be made with him in mind.
After Thibodeau’s departure, fans began dreaming of a Jay Wright-Jalen Brunson reunion. Wright coached Brunson to two national championships at Villanova and has a close relationship with many of the Knicks’ current stars, including Josh Hart and Donte DiVincenzo.
But those dreams might just stay dreams.
Despite constant rumors, Wright has shown no interest in returning to coaching. Seth Davis of HoopsHQ, who works with Wright on TV, shut down the buzz:
“I’ve been working with Jay Wright on TV for three years. Based on every conversation we’ve had, I’d say there’s a greater chance that I will be the next Knicks coach than him.”
As the Knicks coaching search heats up, one thing is clear: Jalen Brunson’s presence will heavily influence who stays, who goes, and who’s coming next.
