It's no surprise teams aren't offering the farm for Jimmy Butler

Jimmy Butler's trade request has put the Miami Heat in a difficult position. Their star player has asked out of the franchise, essentially lowering his trade value. Pat Riley has never been a person who crumbles under pressure, and he has squared off with plenty of disgruntled stars.

However, Butler's situation is slightly different. The veteran forward has a player option on his deal for next year. As such, he can become an unrestricted free agent this summer if the Heat fail to find him a new home ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline.

Herein lies Miami's problem. Opposing teams are aware of Butler's trade request and the risk associated with acquiring him from the Heat. As such, front offices around the league will attempt to lowball the Heat in a bid to minimize the risk to their own franchise.

“We have a big problem here because Jimmy Butler isn’t going to extend with any team,” ESPN's Brian Windhorst said on Tuesday's episode of First Take. “And so because teams know that, they’re offering the Heat right now the pu pu platter. The only team ready to pay Jimmy Butler exactly what he wants is the Phoenix Suns.”

Butler's player option acts like a no-trade clause. If he doesn't like a potential trade destination, he can inform the opposing team he doesn't intend to re-sign, effectively killing the potential deal. Butler could also decide he doesn't like the new situation after arriving on a new team, thus increasing the risk.

It makes sense opposing teams are reluctant to part with valuable assets to free Butler from his situation in South Beach. The risk-to-reward ratio isn't high enough when there's a potential for him to bolt in the summer.

Butler will know what teams he has an interest in joining. If a deal can't be struck now, he can bide his time and make the move in the summer. Either way, he will get what he wants; unfortunately for Miami, they need to maximize their return on him now. That either means working with a franchise such as the Phoenix Suns or accepting a low-end return.

Either way, you can't blame the other 29 teams for approaching the situation with caution. After all, this isn't the first, or even the second time, Butler has looked to force his way out of a franchise.
